Garrad House - News Letter No 4

Hello All, didn’t think we could manage to send our Newsletter in time for the seasons festivities but here it is, short and sweet we hope.

Our film show in November was ‘Tea with Mussolini’ with a really great cast.  Judi Dench, Maggie Smith to name just two actresses with the film being very well received.

The grand oldie ‘White Christmas’ starting Bing Crosby was screened last week with mixed reviews.  I’ve heard even a couple of residents and volunteers were known to have fallen asleep during this one. Perhaps a large lunch was the main culprit and not the lack of excitement in the film!!!!

And speaking of large lunches, our Residents enjoyed their Christmas Dinner here last Sunday cooked by our housekeeper Diane.  What a lovely smell of turkey roasting and Christmas pudding all around the house.  Our Christmas decorations are beautiful, lights twinkling and Christmas bells.

Another Christmas show here at the house was an old fashioned Music Hall extravaganza with sherry and mince pies to follow.

ALL OF US AT GARRAD HOUSE WISH YOU AND YOURS A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS

AND A HAPPY 2012.

From the all volunteers.

Garrad House - Newsletter No 3

It’s almost time to turn back the clocks and say goodbye to the summer. We have had quite a busy time here at Garrad House.

Our Annual Cream Tea was held on Saturday 16th July with a gathering of Residents, their family members, sponsors, staff and volunteers. It does seem so long ago now but the rainy conditions didn’t dampen our spirits and we all enjoyed an afternoon of musical entertainment with a ‘Robert Hop’ hand turned street organ (minus the monkey) giving us some lovely music to listen or sing–a-long with.

Our refreshments were easier this year with the donation of an urn and so making the tea for our guests was much quicker and along with the delicious scones, jam and cream everything disappeared rapidly.

This year we have had an awning installed on the patio and we now have a colourful and very useful sunshade to protect us during the hot weather. (if the sun ever does decide to peek through the clouds).  Our garden alterations are almost complete and starting to look really pretty and with the changing weather conditions some plants are flowering for a second time.

Film nights have included “The Kings Speech”, September was “Bridgette Jones’ Diary” and October is screening “Good night Mr Toms” which some say requires a handy box of tissues.

Just received a joke from Rene one of our residents. Here goes:-A man in hospital needed a new brain and the surgeon told his wife that a man’s brain would cost £5000.00 and a woman’s R2000.00 After much consideration the wife asked “Why is the woman’s brain so much cheaper.  To which the surgeon replied

“It’s because it has been used”.  Hope you all enjoyed that and it made you smile.

Another Pub Lunch was organised by the volunteers and this time a very busy ‘Roundbush’ in Aldenham was the choice.  Excellent food and a lovely atmosphere together with the odd tipple made a very nice change for our residents to comfortably enjoy.

Until the next News Letter, take care and stay well.

From the all volunteers.

Garrad House - Newsletter No 2

Hello again!  Some interesting and varied events have been happening since our last News Letter.

First off was the day trip on the Grand Union canal with a fish & chip lunch on board. Even though we had some rain complete with occasional thunder, both Residents and volunteers all enjoyed this relaxing and leisurely annual event.

Next came the pub lunch at a very busy Two Brewers in Chipperfield and what can we say other than an excellent meal combined with a small amount of liquid refreshment to lubricate the palate was really appreciated by all who attended.

On a more refined note a patchwork event was held in the house with some really fine work displayed for our Residents to see. Quilts, cushions, even Christmas Trees and a Chinese calendar were some of the beautiful and intricate exhibits for us to look at.

The garden is looking good and once completed will be a really relaxing place to sit and enjoy (hoping the sun will shine!!!).

The regular Quiz evening is becoming a really competitive event. Everyone enjoying the fun but some participants not too pleased to be on the losing side. Ooops!!!

Our film of the week was 'The Queen' starring Helen Mirren and was thoroughly enjoyed. Everyone is now looking forward to the next movie night.

We do hope you have enjoyed reading about our outings and events, so until the next time, from all the volunteers - bye for now!
