Abbeyfield is a registered charity dedicated to making the lives of older people easier and more fulfilling. Abbeyfield helps people to live independently by providing a range of services, all of which are linked to the local community.
Because we are a not-for-profit organisation, our prices are kept as low as possible. Any financial surplus is reinvested into our homes, to ensure a comfortable, safe and well-appointed environment to live in.
All our properties are fully-owned by the Abbeyfield Society, which means you can feel secure that your retirement home is here for the long-term. If you need more care in the future, you may decide to move next-door to Friars Mead, Abbeyfield’s Care Home in Kings Langley.
Background
The Abbeyfield Society was founded in 1956 by Major Richard Carr-Gomm. After leaving the Army, Major Carr-Gomm noticed that many of the older people in his neighbourhood of Bermondsey, South London, were lonely and isolated from the larger community. He cashed in his Army pension and bought a small house where he cared for three local elderly people. This house became the first Abbeyfield home.
Support grew for the work Major Carr-Gomm was doing, and today the Abbeyfield Society has over 700 houses across the UK, over 80 care homes and 2 nursing homes, looking after more than 7,000 residents.
Staff and volunteers
Abbeyfield now has approximately 1,600 staff and over 10,000 volunteers who are involved in the running of Abbeyfield homes.
Guided by its original principles, Abbeyfield’s team of volunteers and professional staff offer practical support and companionship to residents within the comfort of their own community. Residents enjoy an assisted independent lifestyle without the worries of running a household or being left alone.
